Afro-rhythmic ghetto soul blending traditional styles from Northern Malawi with a huge range of global influences, led by Malawian musician, vocalist and unstoppable frontman Davie Luhanga.
Tilitose (pronounced “Tilli-toe-say”) meaning “we are in this together” is a cross-cultural meeting of musicians, the result of vocalist Davie Luhanga’s relocation to Scotland in 2014, bringing music from Northern Malawi, fused with funk, jazz, soul, reggae, Latin and more, to a fresh audience, and a brand new band who are in turn adding their own influences.
Born in the city of Mzuzu, Davie Luhanga is a well-known and respected artist in his country of birth, who made his name as a front man and band leader of acts like ‘Souls of the Ghetto’ and ‘Body Mind & Soul’. A veteran of the local scene as ‘Street Rat’, his bands were legends throughout Malawi winning awards such as the Kuche Kuche Music Award and the Music Crossroads Southern Africa InterRegional Festival in Harare, Zimbabwe.
As an energetic live artist, he has performed a number of times at major music festivals including Malawi’s ‘Lake of Stars’, and made a European tour with ‘Body Mind & Soul’ in 2008. His music spans multiple genres and styles from heavy reggae to what he calls ‘Voodjaz’ – traditional Malawian rhythms with a jazzy feel creating a bridge between past and present Malawian cultures, now with a Scottish twist.
