The renowned and excellent DJ Dolphin Boy!
It is club music with a Celtic twist, but done with a rare elegance and style, an infectious combination.
Andy Letcher on ‘Vertical Variations’
Andy Levy, aka Dolphin Boy, has been a producer and DJ for more than 20 years, melding his clubbing chops with a love of the traditionally crafted tune whilst creating some well loved classics and remixes along the way.
His public debut was a primitive showcase with turntable, mixer, CD player, and tape deck. A first album ‘Gateaux Youth’ was a spaciously layered blend of slinky grooves, quirkily sourced samples and custom-recorded vocals which won glowing reviews in the clubland press. ‘Vertical Variations’ then grew around the same time as acts like Shooglenifty, and Martyn Bennett, uniting elements of folk and dance music.
With a love for playing in tiny wee halls all around the Scottish Highlands and Islands, Dolphin Boy has increasingly become known as the folkiest DJ of choice. Following Martyn Bennett’s untimely death in early 2005, his powerful remix of his composition McKay’s Memoirs was released together with the original orchestral version. A subsequent collaboration with jazz saxophonist Phil Bancroft on another Bennett piece, 4 Notes, was premiered to rapturous applause at a memorial concert in 2007.
We are mega pleased to have his sounds echo around the festival at Knockengorroch again this year. A very special folky DJ not to be be missed out on.
