‘Dubjockeys’, Rampant Sound, Glasgow’s original heavyweight dub champions are returning to Knockengorroch once again! The first to encourage the likes of Zion Train, Revolutionary Dub Warriors, Nick Raphael (Manasseh) and many reggae & dub artists to venture north of the border to check out the Scottish scene in the 1990’s, they still have plenty to offer.
The original line-up formed in 1993 included 2 Glaswegians and a Londoner. Competing in Glasgow (a predominantly Techno/dance city) encouraged Rampant Sound to develop an ‘unsoundsytem’ way of playing records. They would mix ‘n scratch much more than traditional sound systems, speed up many of the tunes and coined the phrase ‘dubjockeys’ to appeal to this techno biased audience. They introduced the siren box, echo chambers and many other haunting sounds (including a WWII air-raid siren) to accompany the deep thumping bass rhythms which remain their calling card to this day.
The early 2000s saw Rampant link up with a sound engineer and MC’s & move towards becoming a fully-fledged sound system. More gigs followed at various venues including gigs with the Dub Dentists (now Mungos HiFi) among others.
Recently, with the emergence of new sound systems, a greater cultural mix in the West of Scotland and the world wide success of Mungo’s HiFi, the Dub Scene has exploded in and around Glasgow. Rampant Sound have been asked to play with up and coming artists/sounds including Tom Spirals, Maxi Roots, Crucial Roots, Mighty Oak, Sinai Sound and Riddim Tuffa to name but a few and collaborated and recorded with some of their old foes Dougie Wardrop (Conscious Sounds), the singer Danny Red to remix some 90’s classic dubs and to record some ‘dubplates’ of their own. Rampant Sound are unstoppable and promise to continue playing out and about in Scotland and beyond for as long as possible!
