Winner of Best Hip-Hop at the Scottish Alternative Music Awards 2018, Solareye loves hip hop so much he did a PhD about it.
Intricate rhymes and catchy hooks abound in Solareye. Otherwise known as Dave Hook, he is most recognised as the frontman of Stanley Odd, a band he describes as a ‘gateway drug’ into hip hop. They’ve released five albums combining emceeing, sampling and loops with rock-based live instrumentation, “putting their own captivating spin on the genre” (The Skinny). Solareye, however, is almost entirely synth and sample-based.
To Dave ‘Solareye’ Hook, the goal of hip-hop artists is to give the voiceless a way of expression that tells a story about their stories, struggles and surroundings, something he has tried to bring to the fore in this latest project.
I wanted to make something that challenges that and recognises that we’re all complex, contradictory human beings.
You’d be crazy to miss one of the Scottish hip-hop scene’s leading ambassadors at this year’s Knockengorroch!
