The Badwills are an Edinburgh based Italian musical collective, performing wild tambourine fuelled pizzica, tarantella and tammurriata from the South of Italy, blended with tunes from the Scottish, Irish and English traditions. The band has been performing to audiences around Scotland and Europe since 2010, including sold out Edinburgh Fringe and TradFest shows, and headlining the hugely successful Mediterraneo concert series at Summerhall.
Through song, dance and stories, the Badwills open a window on the lights and shadows of Italy and the Mediterranean, luring audiences through dark alleyways, sun-burnt fields and crowded fish markets. Watch the Pizzicarella, the woman bitten by a mysterious tarantula, and join her while she dances her madness away. Listen through a man’s tears on a Pugliese beach, his beloved sailing away to marry another. Meet Neapolitan rebels fighting invaders throughout the centuries, Sicilian peasants rising against their master. And hear the whisper of an Irish girl warning her Italian lover not to get any closer to her window. Their sound conjures nights of furious dancing as well as intimate gatherings of music and storytelling.
This six piece group will take you right to the heart of the Mediterranean, opening a window on the lights and shadows, glory and madness of the South of Italy. Sounds, words and rhythms to make audiences stomp and dream, wonder and wander. Let the spider bite, and the dancing begin!
