Asazi Space Funk Explosion

Knockengorroch 2026 - Asazi Space Funk Explosion

Asazi Space Funk Explosion’s sound blends afro-funk, hip-hop and cosmic grooves into a tasty stew of booty-shaking joy.

Asazi Space Funk Explosion began life in a Camden basement in 2003, sparked by the meeting of South African vocalist/percussionist Kholeho “Asazi” Mosala and UK multi-instrumentalist Alex Marten. Their early shows, chaotic and euphoric, were powered by a shifting cast of rhythm-section talent and they quickly gained a cult following for their fearless blend of Afro-funk, dub, and spacey dancefloor energy.

The group found its true footing after relocating to Edinburgh, where they became a fixture of the city’s music scene. With African vocal traditions, marimba, and deep funk grooves at their core, they lit up stages from The Jazz Bar and Bongo Club to Knockengorroch, Eden Festival and Doune the Rabbit Hole, winning fans who weren’t quite sure what they were hearing but knew they wanted more.

Following a period of reinvention, Asazi Space Funk Explosion now return with a revitalised line-up. Alongside Asazi’s treacle-rich vocals stands his son Camlo – the rising rapper known as OnlyOneOnlySon – injecting sharp-edged lyricism and a new generational spark. With Paul Dennington (drums) and Ruairidh Morrison (bass) anchoring the rhythm section, the band’s sound has expanded into deeper, more explosive territory.

Today, Asazi Space Funk Explosion are a group reborn: part ritual, part rave, part interstellar funk odyssey. Their shows remain a magnetic collision of African soul, heavy bass, and unbridled energy: music to move bodies and lift spirits.
