We will be releasing a brand new single by Ewan McLennan on 6 November. Roll On was written about Knockengorroch and recorded in lockdown especially for our compilation album Sounds Like Knockengorroch, which will be released in December.
A regular and much-loved face on the Knockengorroch bill, Ewan has come to be known as a guitarist at the forefront of his generation. A troubadour, balladeer and storyteller cut in the old style, he has absorbed a great deal from the older generation of ‘folk greats’ before carving his own path.
Read on to be transported to Knockengorroch…
Keep the bottle going round
Let the whisky flow
A tear for the sober and a health for the road
Chalk up the bow
Play a tune that we all know
Once again we’re gathered here
How the year has spun
Shadows have fallen like a shawl around the sun
And every face I look upon is as new as it is old
Roll on
The girl with the gold and the feathers in her hair
Was down by the water coming up for air
As she rose and she wandered
All the valley sang
The tales that we told in the chalk yellow sun
Are fallen from grace now the nights coming on
Deep down in the blue light
The sky’s rolling in
Roll on
Each of us a traveller we’re all just passing through
Soon those shifting winds will see us spinning out of view
Sending us a wandering
Till the next scene unfolds
The marks that these moments lay upon our skin
Wood smoke and the firelight twisting in the rain
We’ll cast them in the river
And watch them as they roll
Roll on…
