Muckle Spree is a progressive folk music sound. It springs powerfully from Michael Muir’s musical dexterity; which is honed into a multi-stage loop pedal coupled with an array of effects. Through this, both Michael and Ollie Rigg weave an evolution of riffs and tunes, creating drive and harmony that pushes both chaps to their abilities. The whole performance draws on a background of traditional instrument melodies, but balances them on a different edge- one that grooves into the digital-effects age.
Both are multi-instrumentalists with Ollie on whistles, uilleann, Border and Highland Pipes, Flute and Guitar and Michael on guitar, bass, fiddle, stomp and boomerang loop pedal. Michael’s fiddle playing is driven by the strong rhythms of the trad scene and influenced by years spent playing drum kit for Glasgow University Big Band. This influence of jazz and funk can be felt in his guitar accompaniment, which features driving rhythm and strong bass lines. The recent addition of a Boomerang III loop pedal to his pedal board, combined with a Submarine-pro pickup and EHX Pitchfork octave pedal, provides the foundation on which the groove of Muckle Spree is built.
Come and enjoy them at this year’s World Ceilidh!
